Urgent: Windows Upgrade and Support Deadlines

Dear CCNY Windows Users,

We are writing to inform you that support for many versions of the Windows 10 operating system expired on October 14, furthermore some versions of Windows 11 are scheduled to expire November 11 (see table below). This means that computers and laptops using these versions must be upgraded as soon as possible, or they will no longer receive critical security updates.

To maintain security, compliance, and performance, it is essential that all Windows devices are running operating systems that receive updates.

Using the Office of Information Technology (OIT)鈥檚 arsenal of computer management software, we are implementing a plan to systemically identify and upgrade these systems. However, there are many college-issued computers that we cannot evaluate because they are not currently utilizing OIT software and are therefore beyond our ability to account for them, particularly laptops and computers maintained by local departmental IT administrators.

To help us plan to upgrade these computers, we are asking users and local IT administrators to check to determine whether their computer鈥檚 operating systems have expired and if they are to email the IT Service Desk so that we can make accommodations to upgrade them.

How to Check Your Windows Version

  1. Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type winver and press Enter.
  3. A window will appear showing your Windows version and build number (e.g., 21H2, 1809, 22H2).

OIT will be collaborating with all local department IT support teams on a comprehensive upgrade strategy so that we can address vulnerable computers in a timely manner, to minimize interruptions to your academic or administrative work and to keep the college鈥檚 data and network secure.
