CCNY鈥檚 Jennifer Morton wins inaugural national Israel Scheffler Prize

For her unique insights into student and teacher behavior, City College of New York philosophy professor Jennifer Morton is the winner of the inaugural in Philosophy of Education.

APA cited five of Morton鈥檚 connected set of papers on topics in the philosophy of education for presenting her its new award established in memory of the late Israel Scheffler, an influential philosopher of education globally.

Morton鈥檚 insightful papers that caught APA鈥檚 attention are:

  • 鈥淭he Non-Cognitive Challenge to a Liberal Egalitarian Education;鈥
  •  鈥淐ultural Code-Switching: Straddling the Achievement Gap;鈥
  • 鈥淢olding Conscientious, Hard-Working, and Perseverant Students;鈥

The Scheffler Prize will be awarded every third year for either a book or a connected set of three or more papers on a topic in philosophy of education, broadly construed.

An assistant professor of philosophy in City College鈥檚 Division of Humanities and the Arts, Morton鈥檚 areas of research are philosophy of action, moral philosophy, philosophy of education, and political philosophy.

She has published papers in the European Journal of Philosophy, the Journal of Political Philosophy, Ethical Theory and Moral Practice, Research and Theory in Education, among others. She has been awarded a Spencer Foundation grant for her work in Philosophy of Education.

Morton is a graduate of Stanford University (PhD) and Princeton University (A.B.).
