CCNY鈥檚 Michelle Valladares receives Poet of the Year award

City College of New York poet and filmmaker, Michelle Yasmine Valladares is the  鈥檚 Poet of the Year. The award is for her 鈥渓ifelong literary achievements and for her poetry that reflects the rich multicultural spirit of The Americas.鈥

Valladares, who is director of City College鈥檚 MFA Program in Creative Writing, was among 60 poets from around the world that participated in the Americas Poetry Festival in New York. The multilingual event featured readings in five languages.

Born in India and raised in Kuwait, Valladares is the author of 鈥.鈥  Her poems have been nominated for a and appeared in numerous publications including the Aster(ix) Journal, Clockhouse, and The Literary Review.

Her work is included in the anthologies 鈥,鈥 鈥,鈥 and the forthcoming 鈥淭he New Poetry, Modern English Poems by Indians鈥 (Sahitya Akademi).  She received a writer鈥檚 residency from Hedgebrook. 

Valladares co-produced the award winning films 鈥,鈥 directed by Jos茅 Ara煤jo, (Brazil, Best Latin American Film, 1997 Sundance Festival,) and 鈥,鈥 directed by Lourdes Portillo. (Mexico/US, Distinguished Documentary Achievement, Independent Documentary Association).
