On March 26, T��ɫ��Ƶ’s presents “Ninety Minutes with Michael” celebrating the life of , a distinguished professor and director emeritus of the . The virtual event is free and open to the public and looks back at Sorkin’s life as an urbanist, critic and mentor.

On the first anniversary of his passing, due to Covid-19, Sorkin’s comrades—Trevor Boddy, Teddy Cruz, Fonna Forman, Eyal Weizman, Sharon Zukin and his wife Joan Copjec—will gather to consider: What would Michael call on us to do next?

“Michael’s creativity and powerful intellect inspired generations of students at our school to lead the charge for more equitable, resilient, and visionary cities across the globe,” said , interim dean of the Spitzer School. “We look forward to honoring Michael’s profound legacy of scholarship as well as his commitment, over two decades, to our school and its students.” 

Sorkin championed sustainable design as well as inclusive public spaces. Through his nonprofit design studio , he rejected top-down planning projects and imagined alternatives with community advocates.

His writing and wit enticed the public to consider how architecture shapes society. From his early days as a “Village Voice” architecture critic through his late career as publisher of , an imprint of Terreform, he encouraged the design community to embrace social justice. His seminal books included “Exquisite Corpse” and “Twenty Minutes in Manhattan.”

As distinguished professor at CCNY, Sorkin inspired legions of architects and cultural theorists through his teaching and late-night debates. As board member of the Architectural League of New York and founding president of the Urban Design Forum, he balanced generous collegiality with energizing defiance.
