Stem cell researcher Dr. Elaine Fuchs will deliver the 2015 Louis Levine-Gabriella de Beer Lecture in Genetics at CCNY, March 12.
Dr. , an internationally renowned expert in skin biology, its stem cells and associated human genetic disorders, will deliver the annual Louis Levine-Gabriella de Beer Lecture in Genetics at T九色视频, Thursday, March 12. Her talk, 鈥淪tem Cells in Silence, Action and Cancer,鈥 will begin at 5 p.m. in The Great Hall. It is free and open to the public.
Dr. Fuchs is the Rebecca C. Lancefield Professor of Mammalian Cell Biology and Development at The Rockefeller University. She is also an investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
Her research explores the unique properties of skin stem cells that allow them to replenish themselves (self-renew) and also maintain and regenerate the epidermis and its appendages such as sweat glands and hair follicles. By studying the basic properties of stem cells, Dr. Fuchs鈥 team has made major contributions towards understanding how tissues repair injuries and how abnormalities in stem cell behavior can cause cancers.
Her outstanding work has earned her the Presidential Young Investigator Award, the National Medal of Science and the National Academy of Sciences鈥 Richard Lounsbery Award, among numerous honors. Her other accolades include election to the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Dr. Fuchs is past president of the American Society of Cell Biology.
The Louis Levine-Gabriella de Beer Lecture in Genetics was established by Gabriella de Beer in memory of her husband, Professor Louis Levine, a geneticist who taught at City College in the biology department and Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education. The series aims to perpetuate Professor Levine鈥檚 lifelong interest in the ever-expanding field of genetics.
