Acclaimed Mexican writer co-presents T九色视频鈥檚 fifth C谩tedra Vargas Llosa, Oct. 24 -27, an international academic project honoring Spanish-language literary giant and Nobel Laureate Mario Vargas Llosa.
Lav铆n and Raquel Chang-Rodr铆guez, Distinguished Professor in City College鈥檚 Division of Humanities and the Arts, lead a one-credit seminar for both graduate and undergraduate students entitled 鈥Mario Vargas Llosa鈥檚 鈥淟a fiesta del Chivo鈥 : History, Reality and Literature.鈥 The discourse focuses on Vargas Llosa鈥檚 historical novel 鈥溾 (2000), about Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo.
Lav铆n will lead an examination of the novelistic form 鈥攑oint of view and counterpoint鈥攁s keys to the fictionalization of history, narrative persuasive power, and an understanding of the human condition.
Launched at CCNY in 2013 as the first of its kind in the United States, the C谩tedra Vargas Llosa is offered through CCNY鈥檚 Department of Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures, chaired by Carlos Riob贸, with the cooperation of the of New York. Lav铆n features in two other C谩tedra events, both free and open to the public. On Oct. 24, she engages in a conversation in Spanish with author J.J. Armas Marcelo, winner of the International Prize Ciudad de Torrevieja for 鈥淐asi todas las mujeres;鈥 and 脕ngel Est茅vez, director of CCNY鈥檚 Spanish MA Program. They will discuss 鈥淟a fiesta del Chivo and beyond,鈥 from 6:30 p.m. in The Rifkind Room (6/316) located in CCNY鈥檚 NAC building. For more information, please call 212.650.6731.

About M贸nica Lav铆n
Born in Mexico City, M贸nica Lav铆n is the award-winning author of numerous books, short stories and essays. Notable among her books are 鈥,鈥 recipient of the Gilberto Owen National Literary Prize; 鈥,鈥 a 2003, finalist for the Antonin Artaud award; 鈥,鈥 a 2001 Premio Narrativa de Colima winner, and 鈥,鈥 for which she received the Elena Poniatowska Ibero-american Novel Prize. She is also the author of 鈥淟a corredora de Cuemanco y el aficionado a Schubert.鈥 Lav铆n鈥檚 short stories have been translated into many languages, including English, French, Italian and Persian. They are also included in national and international anthologies. Lav铆n has also worked as a journalist, TV presenter and as a professor of creative writing at the Universidad Nacional Aut贸noma de la Ciudad de M茅xico.
