Karissa Collins and Huan Ying Zhang, undergraduates in T��ɫ��Ƶ’s Grove School of Engineering, are recipients of 2021 Dwight David Eisenhower Transportation Fellowships from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The awards total $18,500. The program’s mission is to attract qualified students to the field of transportation and research, and advance transportation workforce development. Luis Abreu, a senior at T��ɫ��Ƶ majoring in civil engineering, is one of 25 Americans selected as Minority Student Fellows by the Washington, D.C.-based Transportation Research Board (TRB), a program unit of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. The Dominican-born Queens resident is the only Fellow from the East Coast north of Maryland State. He’s one of 16 undergraduate and nine graduate students in TRB’s Class of 2021. Imagine harnessing evaporation as a source of energy or developing next generation actuators and artificial muscles for a broad array of applications. These are the new possibilities with the creation by an international team of researchers, led by T��ɫ��Ƶ’s Xi Chen and his co-authors at the CUNY Advanced Science Research Center, of shape-changing crystals that enable energy transfer from evaporation to mechanical motion. Entitled: “ Mechanistic insights of evaporation-induced actuation in supramolecular crystals,” the study appears in the journal “Nature Materials.”

The City University of New York is investing $400,000 in a new transportation and infrastructure training program at T��ɫ��Ƶ. The awards are America’s highest honor for mentors who work with underrepresented groups to develop fully the nation's human resources in STEM.
