Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Chicago has its first major snowstorm as I write, and we鈥檙e looking at a freeze warning over the next few days - so I know, like me, your thoughts now turn to karaoke. I hope you鈥檙e prepared to pick a song, share some food, and spend a little holiday time together as colleagues.
We鈥檒l meet on December 4th, at 4 pm in Shepard 350. You don鈥檛 have to sing, of course, but broad and earnest participation - determinedly agnostic as to levels of talent or training, buoyed up by robust encouragement - has been the order of the day so far, and I know the tradition will continue.
Every year when I write this invitation, I鈥檓 reminded of why we went with a karaoke-themed party all these years ago. At the time, we found ourselves in circumstances very similar to today鈥檚, with significant challenges to our professional and social landscape. It seemed to me then that celebrations, large and small, serious and silly, help restore our reserves of reliance and determination.
I hope to see you on the 4th, mic in hand or not, so we can weave an evening of keeping company with one another into a more resilient community fabric.
