The process of applying for certification consists of two parts:

• The student's responsibility
• The College's responsibility.

Student’s responsibility

You must apply/pay for your certification on your NYSED TEACH Online system.

Applying/paying for your certification:

Use the following information to select the appropriate certificate title and type:

• Select your Area of Interest: CLASSROOM TEACHER or OTHER EXTENSIONS***
• Select your Subject Area: MUST CORRESPOND TO PROGRAM TITLE or Bilingual Education***
• Select the Grade Level: CORRESPONDING GRADE LEVEL.
• Select the Title: SEE PROGRAM NAMES or Bilingual Education Extension***
• Select the Type of Certificate: INTERNSHIP, INITIAL, PROFESSIONAL or TRANSITIONAL B (TF and TFAs only).

After you have selected your certificate “title” and “type”, you will be asked to enter a “program code” by default.

To find your program specific “program code” that corresponds to the CCNY School of Education program that you completed or are completing, kindly follow the link below:

       /education/program-codes

Enter your specific “program code” and click “submit” then “Next”.

Under “Review Type” you will select "I want my application to be reviewed by the State Education Department”.

Click "Next.”

Read and answer the questions that follow under the headings: "Certification Regarding Child Support" and "Moral Character Determination”.

When finished, sign the affidavit by clicking the "Sign Affidavit" box.

Read the next page and sign the application by clicking the "Sign Application" box.

You will be taken to the checkout section and prompted to make a payment ($50 per certificate).

College’s responsibility

The College's responsibility is to submit an electronic recommendation on your behalf, which is done once the CCNY Office of the Registrar has granted your official CCNY degree conferral.

It would be at that time that the College's Certification Officer, Mr. Jose Osorio, would enter the electronic recommendation on your behalf.

This process is generally done around the time of graduation (February, September, and June), after all grades are in for the most recent semester.

Once all of required items (including fingerprinting, New York State Examination results, mandated workshops are in the New York State system, an evaluation is done by the NYSED.

If all items are satisfied, the NYSED will issue the certificate, and you will appear on your NYSED TEACH system as issued.

NYSED Mandated Workshops

If you complete and receive a passing grade in EDUC 41900 (the Child Abuse and Health Education Seminar for undergraduate students) or EDUC 1900G (the Child Abuse and Health Education Seminar for graduate students) you do not have to send proof of workshop completion to the NYSED.

Completion of EDUC 41900 or EDUC 1900G will be included on your final transcript.

NOTE: Autism workshop (for SPED candidates only – completed in SPED 6100I)

For certification as a teacher or school leader in New York State, all candidates must pass several certification examinations

• Educating All Students (EAS)
• Content Specialty Test (CST) - selected depending on specific certificate looking to be achieved
• Bilingual Education Assessment (BEA) - for “Bilingual Education Extension” certification ONLY
• School Building Leader (Parts 1 & 2) – for “School Building Leader” certification ONLY
• School District Leader (Parts 1 & 2) - for “School District Leader” certification ONLY

Kindly note that these requirements are set by the NYSED, not by City College, and are subject to change.

At orientations for newly admitted students, program faculty will give you important information on these examinations.

Passing these exams is not a requirement for graduation, but they are required for New York State certification.
