Two-time Pulitzer winner Lynn Nottage is 2023 CCNY Langston Hughes Medalist

Renowned playwright and screenwriter is the recipient of T九色视频鈥檚 Langston Hughes Medal. The first woman in history to win two Pulitzer Prizes for drama, she鈥檒l receive the Langston Medal at CCNY's 44th annual Langston Hughes Festival on Feb. 9, 2023.

The medal is awarded to highly distinguished writers from throughout the African American diaspora. It recognizes honorees for their impressive works of poetry, fiction, drama, autobiography and critical essays that help to celebrate the memory and tradition of Langston Hughes. Past award winners include: 

鈥    James Baldwin;
鈥    Gwendolyn Brooks;    
鈥    Toni Morrison;
鈥    August Wilson;
鈥    Maya Angelou; 
鈥    Octavia Butler;
鈥    Zadie Smith; 
鈥    Michael Eric Dyson; 
鈥    Rita Dove; and 
鈥    Jamaica Kincaid. 

Nottage received her first Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2009 for her play 鈥淩uined.鈥 She was awarded a historic second Pulitzer for drama in 2017 for her play 鈥淪weat,鈥 and remains the only woman to have won two Pulitzers in the drama category.

Nottage鈥檚 plays have been produced widely in the United States and globally. Her recent work includes the book for 鈥淢J the Musical鈥 (Broadway), the libretto for the 鈥淚ntimate Apparel Opera鈥 (LCT), and 鈥淐lyde鈥檚鈥 (Broadway, 2ST, Goodman Theater), and co-curating the performance installation 鈥淭he Watering Hole鈥 (Signature Theater). 
Her past work includes 鈥淪weat, Ruined,鈥 the book for 鈥淭he Secret Life of Bees;鈥 鈥淢lima's Tale;鈥 鈥淏y the Way, Meet Vera Stark;鈥 鈥淚ntimate Apparel;鈥 鈥淔abulation, or the Re-Education of Undine;鈥 鈥淐rumbs from the Table of Joy;鈥 鈥淟as Meninas;鈥 鈥淢ud, River, Stone;鈥  鈥淧or鈥檏nockers;鈥 and 鈥淧OOF!鈥 She鈥檚 also developed 鈥淭his is Reading,鈥 a performance installation in Reading, Pennsylvania. 

Nottage is the recipient of a MacArthur "Genius Grant" Fellowship (among other awards), is an Associate Professor at Columbia University School of the Arts, and is a member of the Dramatists Guild. .
