More than 70 years ago, Myriam Sarachik’s family fled her native Belgium when the Germans invaded. After several attempts they succeeded in escaping the Nazis in late 1941. They lived for more than five years in Cuba and then settled in New York in 1947. In the early 1960s, Dr. Sarachik battled hard to gain a faculty position in physics at a time when there were few women in the field. Today, Sarachik is Distinguished Professor of Physics at T��ɫ��Ƶ. In the latest treat for young members of the neighboring community and beyond, T��ɫ��Ƶ launches its first annual Harlem Children’s Theatre Festival Saturday, May 9. Fun and educational events are scheduled 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the college’s Aaron Davis Hall Theatre B. The program includes sing-a-longs, storytelling, performances and a raffle at the end of the festival. A NASA mission team led by 12 scientists, including Dr. Z. Hasanthika Sirisena , adjunct lecturer in creative writing at T��ɫ��Ƶ, has won the 2015 Juniper Prize for fiction for her short story collection “The Other One.” The book will be published in spring 2016 by the University of Massachusetts Press, which gives out the award. Sirisena’s stories have appeared in such publications as “Narrative,” “The Kenyon Review,” “Glimmer Train,” “Epoch” and “StoryQuarterly.” Her work has been anthologized in “Best New American Voices” and named a notable story by Best American Short Stories in 2011 and 2012. Danielle G. Rivera, a master of Science in biology major at T��ɫ��Ƶ and five recent CCNY graduates have been awarded National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowships. The fellowships recognize and support exceptional students who have proposed graduate-level research projects in their fields. Selection is through a national competition. Amid increasing flashpoints around the globe, 150 students from the United States and Europe spent the pre-Easter period at T��ɫ��Ƶ learning about the tenets of diplomacy and problem solving.
